Komba Kpakiwa, 31, and Josephine Newahun Foday, 22, were found floating face down in the water at Down Hall Country House Hotel in Hatfield, Essex, on Saturday evening. Today Miss Foday’s grandmother Theresa Farma confirmed that the pair were in a relationship and had been celebrating her birthday when they died. She described Miss Foday, who was originally from Sierra Leone but lived in south , as a ‘loving granddaughter’ who was studying to become a nurse. She said Miss Foday met Mr Komba, from Kent, at the local Co-Op supermarket where he worked as a team manager. Saz Aziz, a Co-Op supervisor, said Mr Komba's wife called to break the news of his death on Sunday.

The couple, both in swimsuits, were pulled from the pool by hotel staff on Saturday night. Emergency services were called to the hotel in Hatfield Heath, Essex, but they were both pronounced dead at the scene. A police spokesman said: ‘Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances leading up to their deaths.‘But they are treating them as non-suspicious.’ It was later revealed that investigators did not believe they had been poisoned by gas or chemicals.
